Sen. Conrad: Obama Veep Vetters Considering Retired Military Leaders

An AP article quotes Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota as saying that Barack Obama's vice presidential vetting team is considering three categories for his vice presidential picks: current top elected officials, former elected officials, and retired military leaders.

North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad met with Obama's vice presidential vetting team Tuesday.

Afterward, he told The Associated Press that they discussed "many names" from three broad categories — current top elected officials, former elected officials and former top military leaders.

Conrad wouldn't reveal which names were discussed. He said it was clear the team is in the early phase of evaluating possibilities and has reached no conclusions about who will be Obama's running mate.

To me, this signals a few things.  First, people like Wesley Clark and Anthony Zinni are on the table.  One of the areas they'd like to shore up is national security credentials.  Secondly, in our endless vice presidential predictions, we are SERIOUSLY ignoring the vast number of FORMER elected officials.  Have you noticed that the main contenders that keep popping up in every poll are current governors and senators?  People such as Bill Bradley and Dick Gephardt need to be considered more.

But what do you think?  Do you think that there are other contenders that aren't being discussed enough?  Feel free to use this diary to discuss this.
